The Literacy for Life Coalition works to mobilize resources and engage people, businesses, government and nonprofits in Southern Arizona to build a culture of literacy. Restoring the region's economic health by improving education and literacy outcomes from birth to adulthood is our top priority.

"Who here wrote a story?" she shouted to the assembled mass of students. Immediately almost half of the packed cafeteria leapt to their feet, and quickly the gaps filled until almost every student was standing, and applauding, to say that yes, they too were part of the work that had been done. "We had over 600 stories come in," Ms. O'Brien continued, to cheers and applause of the students and teachers, "and we needed every single one for the Magic Box to work!"

The younger two, a girl and a boy, are immersed in two picture books, covered in vibrant animals, pulled from the clinic’s reading area. The third child – the oldest – was probably too big to be interested in the picture books that his younger siblings were reading, and had instead brought a young adult book from home.

Local nonprofit organization MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS and a coalition of partners, including Pima County Public Library, United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, and Reach Out and Read Southern Arizona, have launched a unique public awareness campaign. The campaign stresses the importance of reading to children from the day they are born, and the coalition provides resources to help families read aloud to young children (birth to age 5).
